What Is the Inverted U Theory?


The Inverted U Theory, developed by psychologist Robert Yerkes and John Dodson in 1908, describes the relationship between arousal (or pressure) and performance. The theory suggests that:


  • Low pressure leads to low arousal, causing underperformance due to lack of motivation or focus.

  • Moderate pressure increases arousal and improves performance, helping individuals focus and work efficiently.

  • High pressure causes excessive arousal, leading to stress, anxiety, and a drop in performance.

Why Pressure Affects Performance

In the workplace, moderate deadlines can boost productivity by creating a sense of urgency. However, constant tight deadlines and high stakes can lead to burnout and mistakes. Managers who understand this balance can assign tasks that challenge employees without causing excessive stress.


Public Speaking


Many people feel nervous before speaking in public. A little nervousness can improve focus and energy, but too much can cause shaking, forgetting words, or stumbling. Practicing speeches and visualizing success helps speakers stay in the optimal pressure zone.
